I did watch the inauguration, and for the entirety of President Trump’s* speech, I wanted to scream, “That’s not how this works! That’s not how any of this works!”
First, he has an approval rating of forty percent, the lowest of any incoming president of the last seven. I truly expected something during the inauguration to appeal to someone outside his base. There was nothing. It was the same pessimistic and racist rhetoric he has spouted since day one.
“But for too many of our citizens, a different reality exists: Mothers and children trapped in poverty in our inner cities; rusted-out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape of our nation; an education system, flush with cash, but which leaves our young and beautiful students deprived of knowledge; and the crime and gangs and drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of so much unrealized potential.
This American carnage stops right here and stops right now.”
On behalf of educators everywhere, where is all this cash hiding in the school system? Get back to me on that one, please.
Also, I found this line incredibly ironic.
“The establishment protected itself, but not the citizens of our country.”
Is this from the man who did not pay any taxes for years? The man who filed multiple bankruptcies and screwed small businesses repeatedly? Trump is the golden boy of the establishment, and he is filling his cabinet with a swamp of it.
He then made huge, sweeping promises as if he is the only one needed to make decisions. There is no Congress required to pass laws in Trump’s universe. He acts like he is the CEO of a privately owned company with nobody to answer to. This is not his personal empire. Someone should tell him.
“I will fight for you with every breath in my body – and I will never, ever let you down.
America will start winning again, winning like never before.
We will bring back our jobs. We will bring back our borders. We will bring back our wealth. And we will bring back our dreams.”
Next, I absolutely must know if this rule applies to his and his family’s companies.
“We will follow two simple rules: Buy American and Hire American.”
Did he just tell us to boycott the Trump brands? I believe President Trump* just told us to stop buying his products.
He went on to state how we are going to be an example to others; but apparently this only applies internationally.
“We do not seek to impose our way of life on anyone, but rather to let it shine as an example for everyone to follow.”
Trump continued to speak and act like a king who has been voted in for life. He still has made no effort to appeal to anyone outside his campaign base, even within his inaugural speech. It really comes across that he has no idea what he is doing, or how government actually works. Does he realize he has to run again in four years? That he should reach out to members of Congress, because he will need their votes to pass legislation? Twitter rants are not governing. Yelling “FAKE NEWS!” will not win support outside the Infowars crowd.
I’m honestly not sure whether to pop some popcorn or cry. What a mess.
