Gabby Douglas started dreaming of the Olympics when she was four years old. Over 18,000 hours later, she went on to the 2012 Games in London, where she was the first American to earn gold at a single game in both the gymnastic individual all-around and team competitions. She is also the first African-American all-around champion.
Last night, the women’s team earned gold once again in Rio, and they proudly took to the podium and stood for our National Anthem. Unfortunately, Gabby was way too busy being totally self-absorbed in <insert something judgmental>, because…wait for it…she didn’t place her hand over her heart!
It is a fucking travesty against (wo)mankind. Can you imagine the lack of patriotism it takes for a person to devote her entire life, and the lives of her family, to single-mindedly work to achieve the impossible on behalf of her country, then just toss it all out the window with such callousness? The nerve! This must be why we need a wall; we can’t have people in this country who refuse to worship symbols exactly the way one group of people feel they should.
Oh. That sounds familiar. Almost like Sharia Law.
Here is one snapshot…and for the record, each of these commenters is listed as a Trump supporter. SHOCKED! (I really hope these are those Russian bots everyone is talking about. Wishful thinking?)
Gabby Douglas stood at attention rather than hold her heart, and every Twitter Twat with an opinion as to what petty foolishness must constitute “Patriotism” lambasted her to the point she responded from Rio with this statement, which was republished along with an op-ed in the Washington Post:
“In response to a few tweets I saw tonight, I always stand at attention out of respect for our country whenever the national anthem is played,” Douglas, a London Olympics darling after her gold medal performances, tweeted in part. “I never meant any disrespect and apologize if I offended anyone. I’m so overwhelmed at what our team accomplished today and overjoyed that we were able to bring home another gold for our country!”
My favorite was this one, especially since it was in response to one pointing out the opportunity to “complete”:
do you have any words for these athletes Angela? pic.twitter.com/Vzg0vyNfy5

What’s next? Are we going to start handing out Flag Pins? Oh, wait…aren’t they technically desecrating the flag by wearing it rather than flying it on a pole and
bowing down saluting it? How far are we really going to take this faux outrage anyway? The Supreme Court has ruled that it is your First Amendment right to burn the flag in protest; do we need to litigate one’s right to stand at attention? Is this the Authoritarian rabbit hole we are headed down?
Our athletes are having a stellar year. We have the opportunity to take a few moments to show the world we are more than just a shitshow of Trumpism. Let’s take advantage of that and quit with all the bullshit.
Congratulations Gabby Douglas. On behalf of the sane Americans, we couldn’t be prouder.
