I’m no sycophant. I’m totally cool with the idea of compromise. It’s the only way to get anything done in this country, particularly when it comes to our often feckless, rudderless government. But you know what I’m not cool with? Politicians compromising on issues that have a) already been settled and b) offer no good trade off in return. So when I hear that Hillary Clinton is telling people she’d be willing to compromise on abortion as long as protections for the health of the mother are written into any new legislation, it about makes me want to eat my hat.

As reported by RealClearPolitics today, Ms. Clinton said in an interview on MSNBC that she could find herself willing to negotiate on new abortion restrictions if she got guarantees of protecting the health and safety for the mother.

Again, I am where I have been, which is that if there’s a way to structure some kind of constitutional restriction that take into account the life of the mother and her health, then I’m open to that. But I have yet to see the Republicans willing to actually do that, and that would be an area, where if they included health, you could see constitutional action. (source)

The Queen of Triangulation is at it again. Just before she said the preceding, she made sure to mention that her husband Bill, as president, vetoed late term abortion restrictions. Talk about playing both sides and trying to land in the middle. And that is fine when you’re arguing about marginal tax rates and shit like that. But Hillary just exposed herself as willing to hand conservatives back a little bit of the territory feminists and pro-choice advocates have carved out, as long as she got something in return.

Did Hillary just recently wake up from a coma? President Obama has tried on several occasions — Obamacare’s single payer option, Guantanamo, and more — to play nicely with the current crop of Congressional Republicans. He’s gotten almost nothing but ongoing, eternal scandal “investigations” for it. Clinton’s musing on abortion actually remind me of every time Obama has floated the idea of changing Social Security or Medicare to try and entice sportsmanship from the GOP, only to be handed a turd sandwich to eat in the end.

Hillary is showing her willingness to eat that turd sandwich. And all for very cynical, political reasons.

This is her pivot. She’s looking downfield at the General Election and is starting to say shit that she assumes moderates want to hear. Maybe she’s right. But you know what? I don’t want my president sacrificing any human rights that previous generations have fought and won. Would Hillary be open to compromising on marriage equality? Women’s suffrage?

Look, I’m not in any way saying that Hillary’s not “pro-choice.” I’m not saying she’s anti-female. Clearly she’s not and that would be really dumb for me to attack her for. In fact, I’m not even attacking here. I just think this is a galling example of exactly why she turns off a huge swath of voters — her willingness to not only compromise, but to compromise her values. No rational person will think of her as a baby-killing libtard if she doesn’t “compromise” on abortion. Silly fucks will, but we don’t listen to silly fucks for a reason. They’re allowed to be silly fucks and say things silly fucks say, but we are under no obligation to build our society in the silly fuck image.

Your vote is your vote. Ultimately, Hillary will do a fine job if she’s elected, but you better believe I will remember this moment, and you better believe that if she’s given the chance to compromise women’s health choices, and she does, that I will light up the biggest neon sign imaginable and it’ll say…

I told you so.
