Sarah Palin. Michele Bachman. Joni Ernst. Ann Coulter.
Would you want any of those four women anywhere near the Oval Office, even on a White House tour? Then stop calling Killer Mike sexist, please. If you can see why there’d be a reason not to vote for a woman other than said woman’s gender yourself, then you need to stop saying he’s a sexist. Had Killer Mike said, “She has a vagina, therefore she can’t be president,” that’s something completely different, but that’s not what Killer Mike said. At all.
In fact, Killer Mike wasn’t even the one who made the so-called offensive remark; we was quoting what a feminist friend had told him.
The politically charged hip-hop star has been getting slammed on social media for repeating a quote from activist Jane Elliott at a pro-Sanders rally in Atlanta on Tuesday. While relaying a conversation he allegedly had with Elliott, Killer Mike claimed “Jane said, ‘Michael, a uterus doesn’t qualify you to be president of the United States. You have to have policy that’s reflective of social justice.’” (source)
Firstly, let’s stop persecuting someone for repeating what he was told. Secondly, let’s enter into the record that the quote is from a feminist. So you know, someone who kinda gives a shit about sexism. Thirdly, what exactly is the problem with what he quoted Elliott as saying?
“A uterus doesn’t qualify you to be president of the United States. You have to have policy that’s reflective of social justice.”
Now that I look at it, I can see how adding one simple word would possibly fix this quote to where the shouts of “sexism” wouldn’t be coming from the rafters.
“A uterus alone doesn’t qualify you to be president of the United States. You have to have policy that’s reflective of social justice.”
There. That’s exactly what Killer Mike’s friend meant. And it’s also 100% legitimate truth. A uterus alone doesn’t qualify you to be president. You know what else doesn’t qualify you to be a president? A dick. That’s actually what Elliott was saying when she said a uterus doesn’t qualify you; she was saying that we have to look beyond genitalia and gender and look at what’s going on between the ears.
If the pro-Hillary side is going to resort to “Sexism!” as the defacto retort to something someone says, her campaign is doomed. They tried that in 2008. It’s not going to fly in 2016 either. The right has very few valid criticism of the left for the last few years, but one of them is most definitely liberals’ tendency to shout “Racism!” even when Obama is being rightfully criticized about something completely unrelated to his race.
As a Bernie primary supporter who will ultimately vote for the “Please God, Not a Republican” option, I don’t like seeing the sycophants of his or of Hillary’s resorting this kind of petty shit. It’s not even remotely true that Killer Mike’s secondhand quote is sexist, but yet because they know that it’ll rile up her supporters, that’s what Hillary fans hear from her side of the fence. It’s like high school locker drama, and it’s annoying as piss to someone like me. I can’t speak for everyone, but I’m sure I’m not the only one that’s concerned with not own-goaling a win for the GOP, and that’s coming from someone who isn’t a Democrat; I’m just not pro-segregation, and the GOP still is. They just call it “religious freedom” and target LGBT people instead of people of color…who they just try to keep out of the voting booths.
A good, raucous primary fight is something that the Democrats need to have. There are definitely corporatist forces that pull against the populist ones, and it’s being played out in the two candidates Dem voters have to choose from. But while the fight is good, it needs to be clean. It can be loud, but the punches should be above the belt. Sexism isn’t a fair charge to level at Killer Mike, and the fact is the point he was making is dead-on. Unless some Hillary fan wants to tell me we should be super-stoked about a President Sarah Palin situation?
I didn’t think so.
