Party Over Patriotism: Why The GOP Is Now In Bed With Vladimir Putin

Can you imagine if Russia and Vladimir Putin had interfered with American elections in order to sway the outcome in favor of Hillary Clinton? Imagine if Hillary Clinton had won 3 states by a combined total of less than 100,000 ballots, and Donald Trump had a nearly 3 million vote lead in the national popular vote?

If that had happened, armed Trump supporters would be in the streets and calling for a revolution, and the overturn of the Electoral College. Undoubtedly, they would be asking for a new round of voting, questioning Hillary Clinton’s ties to Putin, and blaming the media for the alleged billionaire’s loss.

If there was a point in recent history that I could point to as the date America began her decline, it would be September 11th, 2001. That was the day our country lost its fucking mind, and jingoistic patriotism erupted into full bloom.

Remember the “9/11 Terrorist Hunting Permit” bumper stickers that were all over pickup trucks around the country? Remember how bloodthirsty individuals insulted our oldest ally France and demanded “Freedom Fries” because the French government didn’t think invading Iraq was the appropriate way to defeat Al-Qaeda?

Prior to 9/11, you could be opposed to armed conflict and still be considered an American by the far-right. Once the debris at the World Trade Center had settled, George W. Bush announced to the world that they were either for us, or against us, and the long goose-step march to fascism began.

Russia has been our greatest geo-political foe for the past century, and while we did work with them in defeating Nazi Germany, we’ve been engaged in one proxy war after another with them since Hitler blew his brains out in 1945.

Republicans questioned the donations by Saudi officials to the Clinton Foundation, but Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State has a warm relationship with Russia, and Putin himself. Computer experts found that a server registered to Trump was communicating with a bank in Russia, and his supporters didn’t even blink an eye.

In any other election cycle, ties to Vladimir Putin, along with the myriad of other gaffes made by the Trump campaign would have torpedoed any candidate’s chances. In 2016, Russia not only infiltrated both party’s systems for the sake of gathering intelligence, but purposely attempted to tilt the odds in Donald Trump’s favor, possibly at the direction of Vladimir Putin.

“U.S. intelligence officials now believe with “a high level of confidence” that Russian President Vladimir Putin became personally involved in the covert Russian campaign to interfere in the U.S. presidential election, senior U.S. intelligence officials told NBC News.

Two senior officials with direct access to the information say new intelligence shows that Putin personally directed how hacked material from Democrats was leaked and otherwise used. The intelligence came from diplomatic sources and spies working for U.S. allies, the officials said.

Putin’s objectives were multifaceted, a high-level intelligence source told NBC News. What began as a “vendetta” against Hillary Clinton morphed into an effort to show corruption in American politics and to “split off key American allies by creating the image that [other countries] couldn’t depend on the U.S. to be a credible global leader anymore,” the official said.” (Source)

2016 has outdone the clusterfuck that was 2000 – the election that gave us 8 years of George W. Bush, two misguided wars, thousands of lost American lives, and a recession that was the worst since the Great Depression decades prior.

With the election of Donald Trump, we haven’t just come to a ceasefire, we’re positioned to become a pawn of Russia – and the Republican Party is willing to stand idly by and let it happen. Why? Because winning short-term partisan fights and keeping corporate donors happy is more important to them than the future of our country 5 or 25 years down the line.

More and more evidence is coming to light that the Kremlin not only tried to undermine our democracy, but that our next president is more than willing to become Vladimir Putin’s BFF for a number of reasons, including his personal enrichment.

It’s going to be a long four years, that is if our nation manages to survive a Putin/Trump presidency.
