No, Gloria Steinem, just, no.
Really, Gloria Steinem, really?
I can’t even begin to comprehend how someone like Ms. Steinem — who even helped put “Ms.” into our lexicon — would put down into words such a sexist idea as “young women are saying they support Bernie so they can get dick.”
Okay, I’m paraphrasing a bit here, but when she appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher on February 5th, 2016, her commentary on women and who they support in the Democratic primary was exactly that. Shockingly, the feminist was saying some pretty crazily sexist things. Here’s a clip of Steinem in her own words on Maher’s show.
Wow. Wowy-wow-wow. I would have never thought I’d hear Gloria say such things about women in a generalized way. And the shocking or galling part about it is when she says, “I don’t mean to over-generalize.” She did exactly that. Several times. She generalized about how men and women behave politically when she said, “men tend to get more conservative because they gain power as they age, and women get more radical because they lose power as they age,”and she really stepped onto the Miosgyny Monorail when she said, “And when you’re young, you’re thinking, ‘Where are the boys?’ The boys are with Bernie.”
Holy fuck. She really did imply that young girls are looking for boys and that’s why they’re going with Bernie. Never mind these women they have now, Gloria, who like other women, oh what are we calling them now? Oh that’s right lesbians. So here we have a luminary of feminism shitting on women who love other women, casually out of hand like someone might matter-of-factly say that water is wet. Gross. Totally gross. If I were a lesbian Bernie supporter I’d be pretty damned angry at Gloria right now.
Then what about when she told Maher that after all these years she doesn’t want men and women judged on the same playing field for their beliefs and actions?
“So it’s kind of not fair to measure most women by the standard of most men, because they’re going to get more activist as they get older.” (source
I shudder to think what Ms. Steinem would say to a man who, in her day, had implied that she was only supporting a presidential candidate so she could get fucked. I mean, really, Gloria. Wholy shit I can’t believe how far you went off your own beaten there. And why?
Well, okay, we know why. She’s a Hillary Hawk. She sold out lesbians and women who support Bernie for non-penile reasons everywhere over a political partnership. Again, the only word that comes to mind is gross. Totally gross. How very cynical and unnecessary. Couldn’t she have said something good about Hillary or even bad about Bernie that had nothing to do with the sexual activities of the women who support him?
The shitty thing is that dumb statements like this lend credence to the mouth-breather’s moaning that she’s a misandrist and that all feminists just hate men because they’re not smart enough to figure out this isn’t about gender so much as political partnerships. Then again, how naive am I being in assuming that someone of the feminist vintage that Gloria is wouldn’t stoop to selling out her principles in such a clear and offensive way? Maybe to her, getting a woman in the White House is worth insulting a whole lot of other women in the process. If that’s the case, then she deserves three times the shame I can heap on her in this venue.
This is the kind of petty shit that I wrote about in a previous piece
. The coalition that brought Obama into the White House could splinter over this kind of idiocy and then guess what happens? The next Republican President gets to appoint a couple Supreme Court justices, we lose Roe, we lose Obamacare, and we lose a whole lot more too. I really hope Ms. Steinem comes to her senses, apologizes, and retracts these stupid comments she made. It’s not the end of the world, but it’s really sad and pathetic to see someone like her imply that a woman would sell out her principles for a penis.
I’ve had a penis my whole life, and I can assure you that no one should be selling out their values for one, and even if they are, I thought the whole point Gloria was making all along was, “Who cares? It’s her body. It’s her choice.”
Judgmental, cynical, and offensive are not your colors, Gloria. They look terrible on you.
