Tomorrow is the first congressional hearing on the future of NASA, and Harrison Schmitt is a featured guest. He walked on the moon as an Apollo 17 astronaut, then was a United States senator from New Mexico. He is most noted for his long-time position against climate change. (Or perhaps I should just say his tin foil hat reality denying boob.)
This plays great into the new President’s* strategy to crack down on “politicized science”. He has vowed to eliminate all climate change study at NASA, along with the earth science division. In its place he has committed to a full study of the entire solar system by the end of the century.
Bob Walker, a senior Trump campaign adviser, said there was no need for NASA to do what he has previously described as “politically correct environmental monitoring”.
“We see Nasa in an exploration role, in deep space research,” Walker told the Guardian. “Earth-centric science is better placed at other agencies where it is their prime mission.
“My guess is that it would be difficult to stop all ongoing Nasa programs but future programs should definitely be placed with other agencies. I believe that climate research is necessary but it has been heavily politicized, which has undermined a lot of the work that researchers have been doing. Mr Trump’s decisions will be based upon solid science, not politicized science.” (Guardian)
I’m going to take a wild stab at this and say Bob probably does not have any science background. (That’s just my opinion, though.)
Harrison Schmitt is quite outspoken when it comes to the “myth” of climate change; he basically makes stuff up and then repeats it as truth. That sounds like a familiar strategy. Where have I heard that before?
Schmitt wrote, “There isn’t the slightest evidence that more carbon dioxide has caused more extreme weather.”
He’s also presented incorrect facts about Earth’s climate trends. In a paper he sent to NASA, he wrote, “How long this cooling trend will persist remains to be seen,” saying that Greenland glaciers and Arctic sea ice have been increasing. This piece’s assertions have since been debunked by many academics, as Earth is actually in a warming trend, and both Greenland and the Arctic are losing — not gaining — ice.
Schmitt’s credentials as a NASA astronaut are impressive, but he has significantly less experience in energy and climate science. He’s advocated mining Helium-3on the moon and using it to fuel fusion reactors — a costly source of energy. (NVerse)
He and Trump also have a mutual friend in Alex Jones. On his show, Schmitt and Jones decided climate change was invented during the fall of the Soviet Union, as a cause to champion by the (evidently bored) communists, who now needed something else to do with their time. For evidence, he suggests reading the history of the Civil War, because it was really freaking cold back then; that should be obvious! And there you have it folks, all your science has been debunked…thank you and goodbye!
